A writing app for Chromebook that works offline

ChromeOS does not need another install format. Quorly installs from Chrome itself: one web app, its own window, an icon in the launcher, and it keeps working when the Wi-Fi does not. No Play Store round trip, no Linux container, no account.

Install it in three clicks

  1. Open quorly.dev/app in Chrome.
  2. Open the Chrome menu (⋮) → Cast, save and share → Install page as app. On some versions the same option appears as a small install icon at the right end of the address bar.
  3. Confirm. Quorly opens in its own window and appears in the launcher and shelf.

After that it behaves like any other Chromebook app: pin it to the shelf, open it with the launcher, close it like a window.

Why the web app is the right route on ChromeOS

RouteWhat it costs you
Install the web appThree clicks, no extra runtime, updates itself with the site
Play Store appNeeds an Android build; Quorly does not ship one
Linux containerSeveral setup steps and per-folder sharing; only needed for native Linux builds

There is nothing to keep up to date by hand, because the app is the site.

Offline, honestly

Once the page has loaded and the service worker has cached it, writing, formatting and exporting all work without a connection — including after a browser restart. Two things still need the network: the first visit, and picking up a new version of the app.

If you write somewhere with no signal at all, install it before you leave.

Where your files live on a Chromebook

  • Drafts live in the browser profile: the open document in localStorage, the library in IndexedDB. They belong to that profile on that device.
  • Exports go through Chrome's file picker, so a .md, .pdf or .quorly file lands in Downloads or in your Drive folder.
  • Backups: a .quorly package keeps the document and its images. Local Sync writes one file per document into a folder you choose; Pro Cloud Sync keeps a copy in your own Google Drive.
  • Powerwash or clearing site data deletes the local library. Export before either.

Also available

The desktop app runs on Windows (.exe), macOS (.dmg) and Linux (.AppImage) for people who want a separate window and a separate store from the browser. The builds are unsigned, so the OS warns on first launch. The download page has each file and the first-launch notes.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Quorly on the Play Store?

No. Quorly is a web app, installed from Chrome. There is no Android app and no Linux container to set up.

Does it work offline on a Chromebook?

Yes, once the page has loaded and been installed. Writing, formatting and exporting happen locally. The first load and later updates need a connection.

Will my draft survive a powerwash or a wiped profile?

No. Drafts are stored in the browser profile on that Chromebook. Export a .quorly file, sync a folder with Local Sync, or use Pro Cloud Sync to keep a copy outside the device.

Can I install it on a school-managed Chromebook?

It depends on the admin policy. Managed devices can block web app installs or clear the browser profile on sign-out. If the install option is missing, the policy is why; the editor still works in a normal tab.
